Hi everyone,

My name is Jill, and I'm a homeschooling parent just like you! If you're curious about homeschooling but don't know where to start or if you want more flexibility in your curriculum, you are in the right place! I am a certified K-8 teacher. I taught professionally before having my own children, and now I homeschool full time. I am passionate about teaching in engaging ways and encouraging a life-long love of learning. I want to help you turn any anxiety you have about being your child's teacher into confidence and find the freedom and joy that comes with homeschooling!

When we decided to homeschool, I looked into curriculums and was so disappointed to find that most of them were based on a workbook or online content. That was not what I wanted for my children. No way would I invest in homeschooling just to have them sit at a table doing worksheets or staring at a screen all day. I worried about the bad attitude toward learning that might lead to and the battles we would have over completing all of that work. Worksheets and computer learning are fine in small doses, but I wanted to teach in ways that would fully engage my kids and get them excited about learning.
I want to see their eyes light up as they explore, ask questions, investigate, think deeply, and use their creativity. At the same time, I want to know that they’re learning the content and skills required. If they’re not engaged, they’re not learning or retaining very much. So I developed my own materials using effective instructional methods to teach all of the things my kids needed to learn in each grade. We’re able to tap into their natural curiosity and take advantage of each day’s educational opportunities. We enjoy learning together, it’s not an overwhelming amount of work, and I can be confident that they’re getting a solid education.
With the resources in the H4RL member community, you will be able confidently teach your kids in interactive and engaging ways. I’ve learned a lot about teaching during my years of homeschooling, classroom teaching, and professional development, and the videos on our site allow me to share that knowledge with you. You’ll find support whenever you need it in our forums as well as during live online check-in sessions with me. Learning is a lifestyle for my family. I have so many wonderful memories from the time I’ve spent teaching my children. Let me help take the stress out of homeschooling for you, so you can enjoy seeing them learn and grow.

Jill is such a fantastic teacher. I love her way of wording things and she doesn’t waste words or your attention. Every sentence is constructed to keep the mind engaged and growing in understanding!

Activities for reading, math, writing, science, art, and more!

DO I HAVE TO BUY ADDITIONAL MATERIALS?

H4RL lessons do not require the purchase of additional materials, but there are a few inexpensive math supplies that will be used repeatedly and we would recommend purchasing.  We use a lot of wonderful books, but we get them all from the library.  A lot of materials are included in your membership and you will have only the cost of printing those that you choose to use.  Many lessons use simple supplies that you probably already have.  We suggest a lot of games and other materials, but they are completely optional.  We’re really frugal, so we try to keep that in mind as we plan our lessons!

IS THIS AN ONLINE CURRICULUM?

No, your children will not be learning online.  The videos on our site are for parents.  They are designed to show you how to teach your child effectively.  We’ll outline what your child needs to learn and how to teach it in fun and engaging ways.  We also explain how to evaluate your students’ learning to determine how to continue to build skills and understanding.  Our curriculum is designed to help parents engage with their children in learning activities; you can deepen your child’s understanding by talking with them about their thinking.  When you know what your child needs to learn and how to teach it, you can be confident as your child’s teacher and free to homeschool in ways you and your children enjoy!

WHAT SUBJECTS ARE COVERED?

We’re continuing to build our video library that shows you how to teach math, reading, and writing.  Our enhanced read-alouds include activities for science, art, reading, writing, math, and more.  We are working on more science exploration units and history & geography investigations.  I utilize the national standards to provide guidance on what students need to learn in each grade so that you know what is suggested for your child’s age and can adapt it to work at your child’s level.

WILL MY CHILD LEARN EVERYTHING REQUIRED?

The material taught in H4RL videos follows the national learning standards.  There is a lot of confusion about standards.  They’re really just a way to make sure all students regardless of what state they live in are learning the same basic content at each grade level.  In fact if, most of the curriculums you buy by large homeschooling companies teach the same things that the standards recommend (even if they don’t expressly state that).  The difference with H4RL is that we try to do it in fun and interactive ways and focus on building understanding.  Rather than preparing for a grade level test, you can tailor your instruction to your child’s needs and help them continue to grow and learn while using the standards to give you the confidence that you’re “doing enough.”   With H4RL you can give your child an individualized, high quality education that prepares them for the future and encourages a life-long love of learning.

HOW DO I FIGURE OUT THE RIGHT LEVEL FOR MY CHILD?

Well, that’s one of the really great things about an H4RL membership.  Since you have access to everything, there’s no pressure to figure out what level of curriculum to order.  The math curriculum is organized by grade level and the concepts taught in each lesson are outlined in the description.  You can use the materials for your child’s grade level and pull in activities to support or extend from the grade level above or below if you find that you need them.  Parent videos for reading and writing instruction will help you to determine what level of reading material is appropriate for your child and how to build their skills as they grow.  Many of our materials can be used across grade levels, and we’ll help you understand how to adapt them and know how much to expect as you work with your children.

Are there resources I can access without a membership?

Absolutely!  While the membership gives you access to everything including a supportive homeschool community and expert advice, you can purchase individual, printable resources in the  H4RL store.  Our math curriculum is available there, and the enhanced read-alouds incorporate all subjects.

Inside the membership area you will have access to
