Nerchant Marine academy graduates supervise crews on ships while the vessels are under way. They are often at sea for periods of 6 months or more. They steer and navigate, using lorans, computers , stars, compasses and sextants to determine position and course and speed of their ship.They inspect cargos handling gear, life saving equipment, fishing, towing and dredging gear and see to resolution of any problems that are detected or occur.They stand watches as scheduled, and may even assume command of the ship of the ship’s masters become incapacitated.
